Für ihre Abschlussarbeit an der Neuen Schule für Fotografie hat sich Tina Wessel auf eine fotografische Spurensuche durch das Haus ihrer Großeltern im Schwarzwald begeben, bevor es – nach über 130 Jahren und langem Leerstand – Ende 2020 abgerissen wurde. So entstand ein intimer Dialog mit der Vergangenheit: Die Fotografien erzählen von Krieg und Verlust, aber auch von Liebe und Geborgenheit. Diesen Bildern wird in komprimierten Kompositionen aus Familienfotos, Dokumenten und Gegenständen eine visuelle Zeitreise durch die Historie des Hauses und seiner Bewohner*innen zur Seite gestellt, stark geprägt von traditionellen und religiösen Wertvorstellungen sowie von einem Leben in Gemeinschaft und im Einklang mit der Natur.
Tina Wessel, 1978 in Baden-Baden geboren, zog zum Studium der Kultur- und Theaterwissenschaften nach Berlin. Sie arbeitete im Anschluss viele Jahre an renommierten Kunstmuseen und ‑institutionen in Deutschland und den USA, bis sie sich 2017 als freiberufliche Lektorin selbstständig machte.

For her final project at Neue Schule für Fotografie, Tina Wessel went on a photographic search for traces through her grandparents’ house in the Black Forest before it was demolished—after more than 130 years and a long period of vacancy—at the end of 2020. The result is an intimate dialogue with the past: the photographs tell of war and loss, but also of love and comfort. In compressed compositions of family photos, documents, and objects, these images are juxtaposed in a visual time-travelling journey through the history of the house and its inhabitants, strongly influenced by traditional and religious values as well as by a life in community and in harmony with nature.
Tina Wessel, born in Baden-Baden in 1978, moved to Berlin to study cultural and theater studies. She then worked for many years at renowned art museums and institutions in Germany and the USA until she became a freelance editor in 2017.
